Your pathwayWhat is a Sport & Exercise Physician?
A Sport & Exercise Physician is a specialist medical doctor trained in the diagnosis and management of injury, musculoskeletal pain and exercise-related health. At Cadence, that expertise isn't reserved for elite athletes — it's applied to everyone who wants to move well, whatever that looks like for them.
We're a physician-only practice — not a physiotherapy clinic, not a multidisciplinary centre. Every patient is seen by a specialist doctor first, gets an accurate diagnosis, and leaves with a plan that's realistic for their life. Because timing matters: the sooner a problem is properly understood, the sooner it stops being a bigger one.
We call this movement medicine — the medicine of staying active, at every age and stage. It's broader than sports injuries: it's exercise medicine, active ageing, bone health, and the everyday wear and tear that comes with a life spent on the move.
Quick answerDo I need a referral to see a Sport & Exercise Physician?
Yes — a referral from your GP or other medical specialist is required before you're seen, and it also entitles you to a significantly higher Medicare rebate.
Quick answerHow is this different to a physiotherapist?
A Sport & Exercise Physician is a trained medical specialist who can diagnose, investigate and manage the majority of musculoskeletal conditions, as well as understanding the impact of systemic medical issues on exercise.

Ligament injuries, joint dislocations and instability, fractures and muscle strains — accurate early assessment shapes how well, and how fast, you recover.

From early warning signs to a confirmed stress fracture — accurate diagnosis and identifying the cause matter here more than most.
Read more03Osteoarthritis
Joint pain that's changing how you move? We'll help you understand what's happening and what you can still do about it.

How we workPart of your care team, not instead of it.
We work closely with GPs, physiotherapists, podiatrists, osteopaths, exercise physiologists, dietitians, chiropractors, myotherapists, psychologists and the wider health team, because good outcomes come from a coordinated plan, not a single appointment. As a physician-only practice, we don't provide these services ourselves — when we recommend one, it's because it's genuinely right for you.
If you've referred to us, you'll hear back promptly with clear, practical findings and a detailed management plan — not just a discharge summary.
